About Us

Who is Al, The Birdhouse Man?

I discovered my passion for building homes at a young age, learning the craft from my father during summers from the age of 12. After graduating from Penn State in 1959, I took over our family-owned construction business, where I dedicated my career to building high-quality homes until my retirement at the age of 75.

Looking for a way to stay active and creative after retirement, I began crafting birdhouses as a hobby for family and friends. The process proved to be both relaxing and rewarding, sparking the idea to share my work with a wider audience. Now, I design and build premium birdhouses, tailored to your vision or mine.

Let me create something special for you. Whether it’s a unique custom design or one of my signature styles, I take pride in crafting birdhouses that bring beauty and functionality to any outdoor space.

Birdhouse Facts

When it comes to crafting the perfect birdhouse, attention to detail is key. Here are some essential features every quality birdhouse should include:

  • Solid Wood Construction: Durable and natural materials provide the best environment for birds.

  • Proper Drainage: Floors should have drainage holes to keep the interior dry and safe.

  • Ventilation: Adequate airflow at the eaves is crucial for maintaining a comfortable temperature.

  • Hole Size Matters: The size of the entry hole determines which bird species will nest inside.

  • Placement: Position the birdhouse facing away from prevailing winds to offer protection from the elements.

Build it right, and birds will love to call it home!

My Approach to Crafting
Quality Birdhouses

Every birdhouse I create is designed with durability, functionality, and craftsmanship in mind. Here’s how I ensure each unit meets the highest standards:

  • Premium Materials: I use rough-sawn exterior-grade Southern yellow pine for its exceptional durability and distinctive grain patterns.

  • Strong Construction: Each joint is secured with exterior-grade glue and nails for lasting strength.

  • Smooth Finishes: For standard units, the material is carefully planed and sanded for a polished appearance.

  • Essential Features: All birdhouses are equipped with proper ventilation and drainage to create a safe, comfortable environment for birds.

  • Ease of Maintenance: Each unit is designed to be cleanable, with most featuring hinged sides for easy access during cleanout.

With my meticulous process, I create birdhouses that are not only beautiful but built to last.

R/S (Rough Sawn) Burnt

  • The surface is left as it comes from the sawmill.
  • The burnt finish is an ancient Japanese method of preserving wood.
  • This technique tightens the pulp wood and enhances the grain, resulting in a beautiful, natural finish.
  • Almost all designs can be created with this finish
